NINURTA Chapter 3
English Summary
The guards in Heaven reported to Enlil that they couldn’t stop Ninurta from leaving. Enlil was furious at Ninurta’s recklessness, but he also didn’t want to lose him to Anzu. Equally worried for Ninurta’s safety was his wife, the goddess of healing, Gula. She told Enlil that she’d go after Ninurta and bring him back immediately.
In the meantime, Ninurta had flown far from home. Looking for clues of the Seven Winds’ whereabouts, he decided to stop by the City of Wind, thinking that someone there might know.
However, upon arrival, he discovered that the city and its temples had been converted into a place of worship for Anzu. All the citizens were now fanatics who blindly believed in Anzu’s made-up greatness. The only one who seemed to retain his sanity was the priest of the wind temple.
The priest explained to Ninurta that Anzu had been using the Tablet of Destinies to brainwash people into worshipping him. He had rewritten the fate of the world and put himself as the highest god. One by one, people began getting affected by the Tablet’s powers, starting from the weak-willed. It would only be a matter of time before the gods also fall to Anzu’s whims.
Just imagining his family brainwashed into becoming Anzu’s servants made Ninurta furious. He told the priest that he’d defeat Anzu no matter what.
Seeing Ninurta’s courage and willpower, the priest was reminded of Ninurta’s deeds in defeating the demon Asag in the past. Unlike the others, the priest believed that Ninurta could take on Anzu and supported him fully. Touched by his kindness, Ninurta promised him that he’d succeed.
After telling Ninurta that he can find the Seven Winds at the Wind Highlands, the priest eventually succumbed to Anzu’s brainwashing. Now more determined than ever to free him and the people, Ninurta continued his journey.
Meanwhile, Gula had finally caught up to Ninurta.
