News – Contest Manga Progress Log (Stopped due to Unforeseen Problems)

♥ Share:

This page is a log about me trying to win manga contests to become a professional manga artist for Weekly Shonen Jump, Japan’s current biggest and most famous manga magazine. To get published, I’ll need to win their comic contest with an original comic. If I win, I get to be officially published as a professional artist. If I lose, I just repeat the cycle of joining contests till I win. (Note: This whole thing is stopped for now. Details below.)

Summary

  • How I got here
Having drawn comics since I was a kid, it’s been my dream to become Jump’s manga artist since I was still in high school, so I’ve been drawing and training for it everyday ever since. Years ago, I studied Japanese and moved to Japan on a student visa specifically to make this dream come true. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well, and with my student visa almost expiring, I risked being kicked out of Japan if I don’t have a full-time job.
So I got myself a job as a professional artist in my favourite game company. I continued joining Jump’s contests while I work, but with no luck. (Making manga AND doing a full time job is like doing TWO full time jobs, though! No time for anything!) Eventually, I managed to get myself Japanese citizenship, which means that I can stay in Japan even without a job.
So I quit my job, lived off my savings, and focused all my time and resources to join Jump’s contests again. This page is a log of what I did during this round. (Feb 2025~Feb 2026)
  • How far I got
Over the span of 1 year, I finished and submitted 3 comics and 3 more new storyboards. I didn’t win any of the contests, but I got myself an editor in WSJ and got an illustration job for Jump GIGA. Things looked promising, but my editor suddenly disappeared without warning in Feb 2026. (No reply to any of my messages for months. I don’t know if he’s just busy or if I’ve been abandoned.)
I can totally keep going alone, but one manga taking very long to finish and everything going into the bin if it doesn’t win is burning through my savings quickly. With victory nowhere in sight, and the fear that I might end up living under a bridge, I decided to sadly abandon this project for now. …FOR NOW!!
  • What now?
Find a way to gain financial freedom, so I can gamble my life on Jump again without fearing that I’ll end up as a homeless man in the process. I came to Japan for Jump, so I’m not considering other publishers/magazines at the moment. (One can argue that it’s easier to get in if I have prior experience in another magazine, but I don’t know. I lose all my motivation when it’s not Jump.)
While waiting for my editor’s reply back in Feb, I had a stray thought that it’ll be cool to have a manga artist who can talk to their readers, so I started making and voicing little animated videos on YouTube for fun. I didn’t expect much, but it went a lot better than expected, so I’m now considering becoming a full-time YouTuber to support myself.
Fun fact that before I ever started drawing, 5-year-old me wanted to become a singer, but never pursued it because my family laughed at me when I told them. Years of bullying and trauma after that sadly made me a shy and quiet person, making it even more impossible, so I never tried despite still having a longing for it. Maybe my rotten luck in comic contests is a twisted way for me to make this lost dream come true.
Anyway, I’ll make another post about my YouTube journey and see if I’m any good with videos. Being published in Jump is a lifelong dream and is on my bucket list, so I’ll totally return to it when I can. And who knows, maybe if I get famous on YouTube first, I’ll get more chances of being published when I pitch my comic to them again. Thanks to everyone who supported me. I’ll keep doing my best!!

10th Try [Forever waiting for editor feedback]

  • Project Codename: Lionheart (47 pages)
Storyboard: 2025/11/10 – (Lots of long pauses due to my editor’s busy schedule.)
Final Comic: (Stopped because my editor disappeared)
  • Storyboard check by the editor takes 3-4 days, so I’m making this alongside Zweihänder (9th Try) to increase the speed of my production cycle. (Using the check waiting time to draw Zweihänder’s final comic so my hands are never left empty).
  • 10 Nov 2025: Wrote the plot and the script.
  • 14 Nov – 10 Dec: Wrote the storyboard alongside working on Zweihänder’s final comic. Reached the 3rd storyboard.
  • ~31 Dec: Paused because year end’s a busy time for my editor, so he couldn’t check my work. I completed Zweihänder while waiting.
  • 1-9 Jan 2026: Pausing this project to level up. I found tutorial vids on YouTube by professional mangaka, so I’m currently grinding and learning from them.
  • 10 Jan – 5 Feb: Made and submitted the 4th and 5th storyboard.
  • 5 Feb~: My editor gave me a feedback and I sent him the correction. He didn’t reply for a long time, but didn’t warn me about a busy schedule either, so I waited. While waiting for a reply, I made and sent him 2 more new storyboards, but a reply never came despite my multiple attempts to contact him. I don’t know if he’s just busy or if I’ve been abandoned.
  • May: Three months since my editor disappeared. I’ve tried contacting him a few more times with no luck. I decided to sadly stop this project due to financial problems.

9th Try

  • Project Codename: Zweihänder (47 pages) [FAILED]
    Storyboard: 2025/9/30 – 2025/10/21 + additional revisions
    Final comic: 2025/11/18 – 2025/12/31
  • Working with my editor this time. Hope I can improve lots and make something awesome! He told me to make 47 pages oneshots from now on since that’s the page count if it gets in the magazine.
  • 30 Sep – 21 Oct: Made the storyboard and got an OK from my editor at the 4th version. (Warning that even if the editor OK-ed it, it’s because it’s the best I can do right now. It does NOT guarantee winning the contest, so let’s keep doing our best till the end!)
  • 21 Oct: Finished character designs.
  • 22 Oct – 6 Nov: Took a break to finish some unfinished business.
  • 7-10 Nov: Studied the structure and opening of 10 movies to see if I can improve my storytelling skills.
  • 14-18 Nov: Used the things I learned from the movies to fix the draft again and make the opening scenes easier to understand. My editor said I improved a lot. Yay!
  • 18 Nov – 31 Dec: Drew the final comic. Watched tutorials by professional mangaka on YouTube along the way and fixed my paneling as much as I can accordingly.
  • 31 Dec: Sent the comic to Weekly Shonen Jump’s 105th monthly newcomer contest.
  • Results: Failed. Let’s keep improving!

8th Try

  • Project Codename: Motorcycle (31 pages) [FAILED]
    2025/7/8 – 2025/8/31
  • 8 Jul: Finished the plot.
  • 9 Jul: Finished the script.
  • 10-14 Jul: Finished the storyboard.
  • 14-19 Jul: Studied how to draw mecha and motorcycles. This story has a futuristic setting, but I’ve never drawn futuristic stuff before, so I’m really going out of my comfort zone!
  • 20-26 Jul: Finished all character, weapon and motorcycle designs.
  • 27 Jul – 31 Aug: Made the final comic. Planning to go to Russia in September to study the Russian language and culture out of curiosity, so I was also self-studying Russian on and off to prepare for the trip. Also caught a cold during the final week of this project, so it was chaos!
  • 19 Aug: Phoned Weekly Shonen Jump‘s editorial department to set up a date to show them my comic (持ち込み). It’s a meeting where they’ll assign me an editor who’ll give me professional feedback on my storyboards if they think I have potential in the industry. We’ll meet up on 17 Sep after I return from Russia.
  • 31 Aug-14 Sep: Went to Russia to study in a language school and returned to Tokyo.
  • 17 Sep: Went to Shueisha’s office building in Tokyo to meet Jump’s editor. I brought Balalaika (1st Try), Motorcyle (this comic), and the storyboard of my next comic. The editor quite liked my work, so we’ll be working together to win contests from now on!
(The editor said that Motorcycle was nice and I improved a lot after Balalaika. The new storyboard got rejected though, so I’ll make another one from scratch.)
  • 29 Sep: Sent this comic to Weekly Shonen Jump’s 110th Tezuka Award.
  • Results: Failed, but this manga got me my editor in Shonen Jump, so I’ll count it as a win!
My editor also gave me an illustration job for Jump GIGA, so I got to appear in the magazine a bit. Let’s keep going!

7th Try

  • Project Codename: Balalaika (55 pages) [FAILED]
    2025/2/25 – 2025/5/31
  • 25 Feb: Finished the plot.
  • 26 Feb – 2 Mar: Finished the script.
  • 3 Mar: Finished the character designs.
  • 4 Mar – 31 May: Made the storyboard and final comic. Since this comic’s based on Russian mythology and musical instruments, I did lots of research about Russian culture!
  • 31 May: Sent the comic to Weekly Shonen Jump’s 98th monthly newcomer contest.
  • Results: Failed. My first original comic again after a long hiatus, so I was slow since I needed to do a lot of trial and error, but it was good to help me get back in shape. Also analyzed the winners’ comics to see what I was lacking. After failing a lot in the past, I don’t feel discouraged by failure anymore now, so that’s good growth. Let’s keep going!

Past Tries

  • 6 failed past tries (2 for Weekly Shonen Jump, 1 for Jump Rookie!, 3 for other magazines) from previous years before I started the above batch. All of them are 55-page oneshots.

  1. Your progress is both impressive and inspiring! I also heard today was your birthday, so happy womb breakout day!

Still hard at work on my fic for you, it kinda blew up into something really huge and while I’m worried I can’t deliver that kind of ambition, I will still most certainly try!

    1. Oh you, thank you so much, Villicus! ♥
And ooh! The version that you showed me in Feb was amazing, so I bet the final result will be awesome!
Looking forward to reading it and good luck for finishing it 😀

  2. Best wishes for your birthday! I hope you’ve been doing well in life and on that dream of yours! Can’t wait to see your name in my bookstores ;D

    1. Thanks for the sweet comments, Out! Looks hard, but I’ll do my best till I succeed XD
Good luck to you with everything you’re doing, too!

      1. It’s great! Been hard at studying codes, a bit confusing but aye, we’ve both been there, right? xD

  3. Would have been truly impressive if you got it first try, but it’s okay! Never give up, and keep striving towards that goal! You have a lot of people rooting for you, and I will be one of your loudest supporters.

    Give it your all!

  4. 遅くて返事してすみませんでした!!! ;w;
    この夏はずっと作曲して、新しいOCを作って、クラスをとるから、「ライムさん、漫画家になるように!」とか「誕生日おめでとう」って言葉を伝えるのは全然忘れてしまいました!ごめん!;w;
    ライムさんの努力は凄くて、絶対果たします!そのうちに、漫画家になるということを信じています!頑張って!!>___<

    1. 優しい!!
      いつもありがとうございます。頑張りますね!
      Shiさんも夢が叶いますように~

  5. I was a bit worried for your safety due to ongoing events but it is relieving to know that you made it back alright. Hope you win this time!

    1. Hi, Villicus! Thank you so much for checking here and for cheering for me regularly. You’re too sweet ;u;♥

And thank you so much for worrying. I was afraid they might close borders if things worsens, so I wanted to go while I still can (Needed to gather references for future works) T-T
The city I went too was quite far north, so it didn’t seem affected at all. People and even random strangers on the streets were so nice! I can speak a bit of Russian now XD
Still hoping that peace returns quickly to both sides!

I hope you’re doing well too and have a nice week ahead!

  7. 祝你成功,我十分喜欢你的画,你的漫画也很有意思。你就是我的信仰,我想要成为像你一样的画师,我在为我的捷拉奥拉不断努力学习绘画。也祝你能取得胜利。

  8. I wish you success. I really like your artwork, and your comics are also very interesting. You are my faith, and I want to become an artist like you. I am working hard to learn drawing for my Zeraora. I also wish you victory in your endeavors. (For some reason, the Chinese version kept getting stuck in review, so I had to machine-translate it into English.)

    1. Hello! Thank you so much for your support!
And don’t worry, I saw both the Chinese and the English version.
I need to OK the message for it to appear on the website >.< I'm happy if my work can be inspiring for you. It's really cool that you're learning to draw! Good luck and I hope you have fun in the process and get to the level you want. I'll do my best too 😀

  9. I’ve been coming back to this specific page for weeks, always eager for some update!
Well, I come back to this site period for any update so…
Ooh, I hope your 3rd attempt goes well! I wish I could see what you’ve worked on. Maybe in the future? I will have to see.
Also Happy New Year my dear artist!

    1. You’re too nice. Thank you so much, Ultima 😀 ♥♥
I’ll see if I can upload some panels from the failed works when I have time.
Happy New Year to you too and may this be a happy and fruitful year ^^

  10. I hope you had a great Christmas and new year! Nice to see you still pushing. Be safe and never give up. There are lots of people behind you cheering you on.

    1. Thanks for always being super nice and always checking on me, Villicus. I’ll keep doing my best!;u;
Hope you had a great Christmas and New year too🥰

  11. Hey, don’t know if you’ll see this in time. But I noticed the announcement for the finals for the Zweihänder are coming soon. Best of luck!

    1. Livi, hiiii! Thank you so much for still checking out on me and cheering for me ;u; ♥♥♥
Dunno if I can win, but I hope I can at least reach the finals this time.
      Fingers crossed!

  12. Good luck on your 4th try! Your manga progresses look amazing. If you manage to win a place at Shonen jump, maybe you can put all your scrapped one shots into a single manga book for everyone to read.

    1. Thank you so muuuch!
My OCs there are my precious kids, so I’ll keep them in stock.
I’ll see if I can remake the scrapped oneshots in future so it reaches publication standards 😀

        1. Unfortunately not. Seems that my editor’s super busy lately, so my current comic’s stalling waiting for feedback…
I’m using the waiting time to learn new things and start thinking of ideas for my next comic.
          Hope the feedback comes soon!

  13. I heard your editor hasn’t been in touch for over two months. I’m so sorry to hear that. I really wanted to read your manga comics. I wouldn’t mind if you keep doing YouTube animations, but still.
Have you either tried contacting the editorial assistant or editor in chief about this, or thought about finding a new editor in case of ‘silent rejection?’

    1. Hi, Aidan! Thank you so much for always checking on my progress ;u;
Yeah, I thought of that, but I researched and it seems that it’s common for editors to suddenly vanish for long periods of time (especially if you’re a new artist).
This is the second time my editor disappeared without warning for over a month. Sadly, my financial situation’s not going to hold like this x_x

Having my manga serialized and published is still a huge dream though. If I can somehow monetize my YouTube channel and earn enough to stay alive, I’ll challenge manga again. I miiiiiight have better chances of being accepted too if I got popular on YouTube along the way. Will do my best!
(If they still won’t take me, I’ll think of self publishing and publish my manga either way XD)

      1. If you plan on making manga again, try this tip: deadlines. Tell a future editor that if you don’t hear about your draft by a chosen date, you’ll consider it a pass and either make a new draft or look somewhere else. Self publishing is a good idea though. You can try physical publishing with websites such as lulu, or try webtoon canvas, a platform for publishing your stories in a vertical scrolling format.

        Here’s an example: https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/the-blacksmith-shop/list?title_no=853397

        1. Thank you so much, Aidan!! I’m really happy that someone wants me to succeed with my manga a lot T-T💖💖
I’ll use this experience as a reference the next time I work with an editor.
For now, I’ll try to bring my failed OCs to YouTube and see how OC content does there. (Love my OCs too much to just throw them away because they failed the contests!)
Will do my best! If they actually managed to get famous, I’ll show them off to my publisher XD

  14. Ah dang, that sucks! I wonder why he disappeared. Too bad, I wanted to read your manga comics. (Although, regardless, it would probably be in Japanese, and I cannot read Japanese. So.)

But either way, I love seeing your videos and will support you through YouTube!

    1. Thanks, Livi! ;u;
I’m planning to make an original characters channel once I get comfortable with YouTube, so you’ll actually get to see my OCs and stories.
      Will do my best! XD
(If I can get monetized and earn enough to stay alive, I’ll attempt manga again since it’s still one of my huge dreams…!)

      1. Aaa Thank you so much for looking for it for me 😻✨
I’m unfortunately ultra stubborn about being in Shonen Jump and lose motivation when it’s another magazine, but I’ll keep it in mind in case the worst case scenario happens.
Thank you always for being so supportive!! 🥰🥰

        1. I understand that you like Shonen Jump. I like it too. You’re welcome by the way.

One more thing, I’m not sure if you heard of this, but Shueisha made a manga plus creators website for those who want to publish their manga, and are doing monthly awards with the grand prize having the manga being published on their Manga Plus app. Hope you could give it a try someday. Good luck with your YouTube videos!

          https://mangaplus-creators.jp/about/

          1. Thank you so much as always! I’ll think about it.
For now, I’ll focus on somehow creating a steady income stream first so I don’t turn into a homeless while I gamble for victory in contests XD
(1 contest manga taking at least 2 months to finish with 0 income, and then everything going to the bin when I don’t win is burning through my savings quickly! >_<)

  15. The editor got AFK in real life…
(hope he returns to help you, if he don’t come back my ghost will chase him for all his life!!)

    1. Sad, but things happen, I guess 🙁
I’ll just use this as a chance to learn and do new things. I’m actually quite excited about YouTube since I can make things without modifying my content to fit an existing publisher image, and because I can set my own pace. If he actually comes back, I’ll surprise him with how much I’ve grown! XD

      1. Damn I wish I can help you but I never edited someting!!
I know you can made it, you’re so talented and creative
And if you wanna try someting… maybe you can try with pinterest (so many people stole your art and every time I see it I must report them because they don’t give credits) I hear you can get money with pinterest, I’m trying publishing some art there
Your art is pretty famous there, that’s how I know you on 2022

        1. Lots of thanks for the support, Zepht💙💙
I actually don’t mind people posting my art on other websites. (Free advertisement XDD)
If people see me enough, I think they’ll eventually find my original account here.

And ooh! Good luck with publishing on pinterest!
As for me, I’m planning to try RedBubble or maybe Kindle in future. Let’s see 👀

          1. I didn’t know any of that pages.
Well people don’t sees my work on pinterest, but even with that I’ll continue publishing my art, maybe I’m not good enough but I’ll continue until I’m good enough at art

          2. Aww, from the art of Zephyr you drew for me long back, I think you draw pretty well and put a lot of care in your work!
Good luck with your projects too, Zepht!
