Bio
Enlil is the ancient Mesopotamian god of wind and storms. He’s also the chief deity of the Mesopotamian pantheon. Enlil’s wives are the goddesses Ninmah and Sud. With Ninmah, he has Ninurta, his son and heir. A powerful supreme god, Enlil has a strict nature with an air of authority.

Having a serious personality, Enlil naturally doesn’t get along well with his cheerful, easygoing brother Enki. He’s easy to anger around him. Even so, Enlil shows his gentler side when it comes to his wives and children.

In ‘NINURTA’, Enlil is a responsible supreme god who cares a lot for his people and family. When Anzu betrays him and steals the Tablet of Destinies, Enlil quickly puts up a barrier to protect the abode of the gods from falling into Anzu’s hands. He then sets up a mission to retrieve the Tablet, but is greatly worried when his son Ninurta endangers himself by being the one to pursue Anzu.

The Tablet of Destinies
The Tablet of Destinies is a tablet that has the power to turn everything written on it into reality. The supreme god Enlil owns it and uses it to write the fate of the world, keeping order and peace in both Heaven and Earth.

In the ‘Myth of Anzû’, Enlil’s guardian beast Anzu betrays Enlil and steals the Tablet while he’s bathing. If Anzu has the Tablet, then everything he writes on it will pass as the command of the supreme god and he’s free to do whatever he wants. To prevent that, Enlil sends the gods to pursue Anzu and retrieve the Tablet ASAP.

Trivia

  • Enlil is based on the ancient Mesopotamian god Enlil.
  • In the Babylonian flood myth, Enlil caused a great flood to exterminate the human race, who had become overpopulated and made too much noise, preventing him from sleeping. Enki warned Utnapishtim and his family to make a boat before the flood came, saving the human race from total annihilation.
  • In the ‘Lugal-e’ myth, Enlil gave Ninurta advice and strategies so he could defeat the demon Asag.
