Bio
Ninmah is the ancient Mesopotamian mother goddess of the mountains. She’s Enlil‘s wife and Ninurta‘s mother. Among the Mesopotamian deities, Ninmah probably has the most number of names. Some of them are Ninhursag, Nintu, Damgalnuna, Mami and Aruru.

Having a gentle and protective nature, Ninmah is kind to those around her and likes to take care of everyone. She worries over her son Ninurta a lot and takes care of him when he’s wounded.

In ‘NINURTA’, Ninmah loves Ninurta greatly and is sad that he has to go and face the beast Anzu. However, unlike her husband Enlil, Ninmah knows that Ninurta is unstoppable once he sets his goals. So she chooses to support him despite the danger he’s getting himself into. She gives Ninurta some advice and tells him to seek the Seven Winds‘ help to defeat Anzu. She then wishes him luck and sees him off.

Ninmah and Ninurta
Ninmah and Ninurta seems to be quite close to each other as mother and son in several myths.

In ‘Lugal-e’, after slaying Asag and his army, Ninurta reorganizes the world by creating mountains and rearranging the rivers and streams. When Ninmah comes to congratulate his victory, Ninurta dedicates the mountains to her and gives her the name Ninhursag, which means ‘Lady of the Mountain’.

In ‘Ninurta and the Turtle’, Ninmah is greatly saddened when Ninurta thinks of betraying Enlil for his own ambitions. Her deep disappointment leads her to thinking of finding a substitute for her son.
