English Summary
Anzu had betrayed Enlil and stolen the Tablet of Destinies for his personal gain. The warrior gods Adad, Shara and Girra pursued him with their powerful thunderbolts, arrows and fires. But Anzu, using the almighty Tablet, was able to defeat them easily and turn them into clay statues.
Fearing the same fate, neither god nor man was willing to face the power-hungry Anzu. Heaven and Earth was in great danger, but then someone rose to take on the challenge—the warrior god Ninurta.
Ninurta made his preparations with Sharur, getting ready to leave the abode of the gods in Heaven to look for Anzu’s hiding place. Knowing that his father Enlil was worried about his safety and wouldn’t let him fight Anzu, Ninurta made his plans in secret.
Before he could leave, Enlil came to him to talk about how grave the situation was. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if anything happened to Ninurta and his family. Ninurta understood Enlil’s feelings, but decided that he had to go and stop Anzu before it’s too late.
So hidden in the dark of night, he sneaked past the guards and successfully arrived at the city’s borders. However, it appeared that his mother, the goddess Ninmah was already there waiting for him.
She knew how his son was—a kind person who would fight for justice. No one could stop him once he had set his mind on something. So although she was worried about him, she let him go and gave him some advice instead.
Ninmah told Ninurta that Enlil’s old friends the Seven Winds had aided him during difficult times in the past. If Ninurta seeked them out before fighting Anzu, they’d sure be of great help. Finally, she told Ninurta that no matter what happened, Ninurta was their precious son. She wished him a safe return and saw him off.
With his mother’s blessings, Ninurta broke through the city’s barrier and took off on his journey. Alerted of Ninurta’s sudden departure, Enlil was shocked. Watching everything from his temple, Enki looked forward to the turn of events. The fate of the world now laid in Ninurta’s hands.
