Chapter 2: The Cursed Children
English Summary
Anjou and EVA discussed about the children they rescued from the Black Swan orphanage. They were all S-Rank dragon hybrids with unstable bloodlines, so it wouldn’t be strange for them to suddenly lose control of their powers and turn into powerful dragons. Fearing the risks, Cassell’s board of directors wanted Anjou to get rid of them immediately.
But Anjou wanted to give them a chance, sympathizing with them as a survivor himself and thinking that they would be useful in their war against the dragons. He asked Hee-chan, a kitsune who’s close to his friend Uesugi Koshi, to pretend to be a student and watch over the Black Swan children.
Meanwhile, Rifma had recovered and was allowed to go to his dorm. Still unable to come to terms with his past, he changed his name to Rhyme on Anjou’s suggestion, so he could focus on starting a new life as a student in Cassell College. Rifma was looking forward to talking with his siblings again, but a shocking sight greeted him at the dorm.
He and his siblings were made to live in a separate dorm away from the other students, under the supervision of unfriendly bodyguards. Kanna explained that the board of directors didn’t trust them because of their unstable bloodlines. But while Rhyme was out, everyone had been working hard to prove that they weren’t dangerous. Fortunately, they were slowly gaining some freedom. Everyone hoped that they’d be allowed to mingle with the other students someday.
Feeling a little better about the situation, Rhyme headed to his room. It seemed that their dorm used to be the old girls’ dorm that had been abandoned. The toilet was rumored to be haunted, so Violu, Leon and Ugetsu were trying to prove it. Rhyme shuddered and went up the stairs.
It seemed that Sola was his roommate. He hadn’t returned yet, so Rhyme looked around. There were decorations put up by his siblings to welcome him home. There were also photos of Sola having fun with a girl. Sola returned then, saying that he’d show Rhyme around the campus.
As they explore the campus, they saw Kazuto, Kuronon and Apoline putting up a dance show for their senior Chu Zihang and other spectators. Rhyme was happy that his siblings were having fun, but was sad at the same time that there were only a few Black Swan survivors. Sola told him to not lose hope because there may be others out there.
In fact, another survivor, codenamed ‘Seikimatsu’, was currently held in Cassell’s dungeon because her bloodline was too unstable and she was prone to going berserk. Seikimatsu being a secret project in Black Swan’s lab, Rhyme and the others had never met her. Rhyme was just about to ask about it when Cassell’s danger alarms blared.
Seikimatsu had escaped! Being a powerful S-Rank, she easily took out the guards who pursued her and destroyed her surroundings as she made for the college’s fountain area. EVA made an announcement and asked everyone to leave the area immediately and save themselves.
