NINURTA Chapter 9

English Summary

Ninurta arrived at the abode of the gods with a new strategy, challenging Anzu to a rematch. Knowing that Enlil was watching, Anzu taunted Ninurta, saying that he might as well defeat Ninurta in front of his father’s eyes. With that, Anzu sent his men at Ninurta, but Ninurta wasn’t about to be beaten up a second time.

Coming prepared, Ninurta put his strategy into action. First, he asked the foul-smelling gas to give out a strong stench at the brainwashed humans. Unable to stand the smell, the humans shrieked and ran away, holding their breaths.

He then asked the hot wind and the cold wind to make the surrounding temperatures unsuitable for the humans. The men quickly fell down from the heat and shivered from the cold, unable to move. That way, Anzu’s men eventually became disorganized and weren’t able to fight.

Greatly angered, Anzu sent the brainwashed children to fight Ninurta. Ninurta countered by throwing the fluffy Sharur at them. Sharur then proceeded to tickle the children, harmlessly getting them out of the battle. The Seven Winds were impressed at how Ninurta managed to defeat all of Anzu’s guards without hurting a single soul.

The humans out of the way, Ninurta got ready for a duel with Anzu.

Meanwhile, Enlil watched the great battle unfold from his temple, while commanding his subordinates to protect their dwelling. Foreboding thunderclouds had gathered atop a cliff in the distance, causing him to worry.

A guard came to tell Enlil that the messenger beasts reported that Ninurta was fighting Anzu there with the Seven Winds. Enlil was greatly surprised. He was impressed that Ninurta managed to get acknowledged by the Winds and received their aid, and then bravely challenged Anzu. Maybe he was wrong in thinking that Ninurta couldn’t protect himself—his son had grown up to be a powerful god.

The guard asked Enlil if they should send Ninurta some reinforcements. But Enlil said that they should focus on defending their dwelling instead, so Ninurta can fight Anzu without worrying about them. He believed in Ninurta and hoped that his son would succeed and return safely.

Anzu and Ninurta got ready for a duel. Ninurta asked Anzu why he betrayed Enlil. Anzu had been so loyal this whole time, guarding the Tablet of Destinies for Enlil.

Anzu laughed, explaining that it was because the Tablet of Destinies was so much within his reach. Once he got the Tablet, even Anzu, formerly just a humble servant, can become the king of all the gods. Seeing the Tablet everyday made him want it even more, so when he saw his chance, he took it. Anzu believed that becoming the supreme god was his fate.

Hearing that, Ninurta was angry that Anzu only thought about his own selfish ambitions. He was even willing to betray his master and force people under his control. Swearing to stop Anzu, Ninurta asked the gust and the whirlwind to fuse into a new weapon—the Wind Blade.

Ninurta and Anzu clashed in their final battle.
